Adjustable Heel Fins are more popular for SCUBA and offer more thrust. The end of the fin is open with an adjustable strap that goes around the ankle. It's highly recommended to use boots to protect the feet.

The water is usually warm enough that you can go snorkeling in Honolulu year round without a wet suit but if you're going to be around sharp rocks and coral that can easily cut skin, protective clothing and rash guards can help. Long sleeves will also protect you from sun damage and some clothes will even come with UV protection in the material.
