When you get a Rental Car in Honolulu, there are two very important things to keep in mind:

1. Gas prices are higher here than on the mainland.
2. City parking can be difficult and expensive.

Downtown Honolulu is the worst spot for parking but if you're going to Waikiki look for some free parking in these areas. (Read the street signs carefully! Some places do not allow overnight parking and some streets must be empty during street cleaning.) Most shopping centers and grocery stores have their own free parking lots.
