Preserve Honolulu
Whether you live here or are visiting, please help preserve Honolulu. By keeping the city and beaches clean and respecting nature and the animals, Honolulu will remain the island paradise that so many of us love.
Use public transportation or green cars.
Honolulu has a pretty good public transportation system and privately run trolleys that both locals and visitors use. Check the schedules and you might be able to use the bus or trolley instead of a cab or the car. If you do need to rent a car, look for a hybrid!
You're on vacation, you're staying in a hotel where someone else is paying the energy and water bill but it's still important to conserve energy in order to help preserve Honolulu. Nothing too complicated - just turn lights and the television off when you leave.
Many Honolulu hotels have water saving programs. If you don't need your towels and bedding changed every day, just let them know.
In the water or on land, you will see birds, fish and if you're lucky, sea turtles and you may even be able to get quite close but please do not disturb them. Watch them from a safe distance, appreciate them and then let them be. And please, no junk food! If it's bad for people, it's probably bad for the animals too.
Visit the Waikiki Aquarium, the Discovery Museum and the Audubon to learn about the local environment, its uniqueness and its challenges. Learn what these organizations do to preserve Honolulu and pass the knowledge on to others.
Fish responsibly.
People in Hawaii love to fish and want to keep the ocean and its marine life healthy. Improperly discarded fish hooks and fishing line can be deadly to many animals. Please don't forget to pick up after yourself and obey the fishing rules and regulations. If everyone fishes responsible, the fish population will stay stable and healthy.
Get involved.
Choose an organization you trust and believe in and support it. Your support can be in the form of monetary donations or you can contribute your time. Beach clean-ups, for example, don't require much of your time, just a few hours, and can be a good family activity. Check local newspapers for events while you are here.
