Preserve Honolulu

Whether you live here or are visiting, please help preserve Honolulu. By keeping the city and beaches clean and respecting nature and the animals, Honolulu will remain the island paradise that so many of us love.

Please do not disturb the animals.
Photo of a sea turtle. In the water or on land, you will see birds, fish and if you're lucky, sea turtles and you may even be able to get quite close but please do not disturb them. Watch them from a safe distance, appreciate them and then let them be.

Please don't feed the wild animals.
They will not starve if people don't feed them and the bread and junk food that most people give the animals is bad for them anyway. It's tempting, but these are wild animals and letting them alone will keep them wild.

Conserve energy and water.
You're on vacation, you're staying in a hotel where someone else is paying the energy and water bill but it's still important to conserve energy in order to help preserve Honolulu. Nothing too complicated - just turn lights and the television off when you leave.

Many hotels have water saving programs. If you don't need your towels and bedding changed every day, just let them know.

Click here for more on saving energy, even when you're on vacation.

Photo of a trash can.Please don't litter
There's never any reason to throw trash on the ground or out of the car but people do all the time. It doesn't take much effort to find a trash can. Or even better ... recycle! The environment will thank you.

Support local environmental organizations.
Visit the
Waikiki Aquarium, the Discovery Museum and the Audubon to learn about the local environment, its uniqueness and its challenges. Learn what these organizations do to preserve Honolulu and pass the knowledge on to others.

Fishing on Oahu. Fish responsibly.
People in Hawaii love to fish and want to keep the ocean and its marine life healthly. Improperly disgarded fish hooks and fishing line can be deadly to many animals so please don't forget to pick up after yourself and obey the fishing rules and regulations so the fish population stays stable and healthy.

Use public transportation when possible.
Honolulu has a pretty good public transportation system and privately run trolleys that both locals and visitors use. Check the schedules and you might be able to use the bus or trolley instead of a cab or the car.

Get involved.
Choose an organization you trust and believe in and support it. Your support can be in the form of monetary donations or you can contribute your time. Beach clean-ups, for example, don't require much of your time, just a few hours, and can be a good family activity. Check local newspapers for events while you are here.

Keep Hawaii Clean sign.

Thank You for Keeping Honolulu Beautiful!
