Oahu Weather

Have you ever heard how wonderful Oahu Weather is? It's true! Warm weather, lots of sun, great sunsets and the most beautiful beaches. Hawaii is considered tropical so Oahu also gets rain.

Leeward and Windward Sides of Oahu

If you watch the weather on the local news in Hawaii, the weather person will most likely use these terms. It's common to use these terms for subjects other than weather too to describe which side of the island someone's referring to.

The Leeward Side refers to the west side of Oahu. It’s warmer and dryer on this side of the island and this is where you will get the best views of Oahu’s amazing sunsets.

The Windward Side refers to the east side of Oahu where it’s, well, more windy. The Windward Side also gets a lot more rain than the rest of the island, including Honolulu. This is because more storms come from the East and dump their rain before getting to Waikiki and Honolulu. The abundant rainfall helps keep everything lush, green and beautiful.

North Shore Oahu

North Shore Oahu is known for the world class surfing competitions held there thanks to the incredible waves. North Shore gets the big waves in the winter and that’s when the big surfing competitions are held. Expect some rain in the winter.

Some beaches on the North Shore get cooler in the winter, especially in the evenings.

Honolulu and Waikiki

Honolulu and Waikiki have some of the best weather! It does rain, mostly in the winter, but not so much that it will hinder your vacation. It’s warm and humid with wonderful breezes and warm ocean water.

Winds

Oahu gets Kona Winds from the Southeast in the winter and Trade Winds from the Northeast most of the year. When there are not winds, it can get pretty warm and humid.
