The Honolulu Airport

The Honolulu Airport (HNL) is the largest airport in Hawaii and a major stop over point for people traveling internationally. It offers a wonderful central location just 10 miles or 16 kilometers outside of Waikiki. It is one of the largest and busiest airports in the world and because it is landscaped with trees and flowers of the Hawaiian Islands, it's also one of the prettiest.

The airport in Honolulu has everything you would expect at an international airport; restaurants and bars, gift shops and duty free shopping, post office, currency exchange, banks and more. It also has a few other unexpected things like a stand to buy Hawaiian leis and an agricultural check point.

Airport Terminals

The Honolulu Airport has 3 terminals;

  • the commuter terminal
  • the interisland terminal
  • the overseas terminal

If you don't want to walk all the way from gate to gate and terminal to terminal with your luggage, the airport offers an intra-airport shuttle to help connect passengers to the 3 terminals.

Agriculture Check Point

If you are leaving Hawaii, there are restrictions on what you can take with you to help prevent spreading fruit flies and other hazardous insects and diseases. You are asked to report all agricultural items in your possession to the agricultural inspectors and you may be asked to give up your fruits, plants, live snails and other items before leaving. The pre-flight inspections are conducted by the Department of Agriculture and usually go quickly but it is one more check point you'll have to go through.

Ground Transportation

Different types of ground transportation are available to you from the city bus to taxis and private shuttles. If you're getting a rental car, all the major rental companies have desks at the airport and the freeway entrance is right there so you can quickly be on your way no matter where on the island you're going.
