Have you ever heard that Honolulu Traffic is bad? It is but not so bad that people can't get around so if you're thinking of renting a car while you're in Honolulu, don't let the traffic stop you. The traffic can be slow but the drivers here are usually not crazy or aggressive.
As you might expect, traffic is heaviest during rush hour and special events. During the week, most traffic is coming into Honolulu in the morning and heading out of Honolulu in the afternoon. Like everywhere else, accidents, weather and special events will cause delays.
Highway Speed Limits Are Lower Here
You might not always be able to tell by the speed of traffic but the highways in Hawaii have lower speed limits than elsewhere. The speed limit along some parts of the H1 through Honolulu is only 45 miles per hour which is about 72.5 kilometers per hour and the highest speed limit in Hawaii is 60 miles per hour or about 96 kilometers per hour. And yes, the highway patrol are out giving speeding tickets. Remember: everything is more relaxed in Hawaii and things move just a little slower, including the traffic.
On a positive note: you will find Car Pool Lanes on Oahu highways.
One Way Streets
Like many downtown areas, Honolulu has its share of one way streets that can make driving complicated. One resource we find extremely helpful is the Honolulu/Oahu, Hawaii Atlas. The downtown maps in this guide book have arrows showing which way the streets run which makes getting around so much easier. Knowing that a street runs only one way is helpful but knowing which way it goes is even better.
Special Events
Honolulu is a major city with many exciting events happening year round that make it a fun place to be. Those events also make Honolulu Traffic more difficult. Here are some spots to watch out for:
~around Aloha Stadium when its hosting a big game.
~around all malls at Christmas time.
~street closures during marathons and parades.
It's always a bit nerve racking driving in a new place but driving in Honolulu and around the island of Oahu is not too difficult so don't be afraid to hop in the car and explore all the beautiful sites Honolulu and Oahu offer.
