Honolulu Jobs

If you want to work in Hawaii, there are lots of Honolulu jobs to choose from. Many people want to come to Oahu for the sun and beach and many love it, but island living is not for everyone. That’s why many Hawaii employers will only speak with applicants already living in Hawaii. Employers want to make sure the candidates will stay. If you think Honolulu is where you want to work, we wish you the best of luck with your job search and would like to offer some tips.

Where To Look

Of course a good place to start is the internet. Craigslist and monster.com are two of the biggest and most popular sites for finding a job.

You can also try some of the local job sites that are also free for job seekers and allow you to search jobs and post your resume:

  • HawaiiJobsOnDemand.com
  • HireNetHawaii.com

Going straight to a company's website is also a good way to find openings. Many companies like the big hotels prefer applicants to apply through their websites by creating a login and submitting resumes and cover letters online.

Networking

In some ways, Honolulu is a very small town. Word of mouth and referrals are very important so networking is great when searching for Honolulu jobs.

Here are a few FREE networking events you can try:

Green Drinks: the first Tuesday of the month. Location varies.

Social Media Club Hawaii: second Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm at Fresh Cafe.

Working Downtown

Most of the jobs in Hawaii are on Oahu and most of the jobs on Oahu are in downtown Honolulu. And since Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii, that’s where many government jobs are.

Parking is difficult and can be expensive. Not all employers will offer parking. Many people do use the bus because it is convenient for the downtown area.

Working downtown does have great advantages. You’ve got some great restaurants for lunch within easy walking distance plus you’ve got banks and the post office all super close.

Working In Waikiki

Waikiki is all about tourism so most jobs are in the retail or hospitality business; hotels, restaurants and shopping. The big resort hotels also do time shares and seem to always be recruiting for sales positions.

Parking is an issue in Waikiki and very few employers are able to offer parking to employees so be prepared to pay for parking. Public transportation is a great alternative with many buses coming and going all day.

Perks to working in Waikiki is, of course, the location. Plenty of restaurants and shopping and how about going to hang out at the beach after work?

Salary And Benefits

The cost of living is higher in Hawaii so the salaries should be higher right? They should be, but they’re not. On the other hand, the health benefits are quite good. Even part time employees are eligible for group health benefits.

Fun Jobs On The Beach

Not everyone in Hawaii works in the corporate world. There are many Honolulu jobs on the beach and though they don’t pay a lot, you get to be outside. Beach jobs include working in concessions and beach rentals, life guarding and giving surf lessons.
