Honolulu Jellyfish Warning

It's tempting to ignore the Honolulu Jellyfish Warning you see posted along the beaches each month during full moon, but don't! Jellyfish stings are painful!

For about 10 days after full moon, box jellyfish swarm around the beaches so much that authorities discourage beach goers from entering the water. Of course many still do, and some get stung. Stings are painful and may require a hospital visit and are especially dangerous for anyone allergic.

First Aid for Jellyfish Stings

If there's a lifeguard around, let him/her know immediately that you have been stung. S/he should know what to do and have something in the first aid kit. If it is a severe sting or is causing severe pain, get medical attention right away.

For minor stings, douse it with vinegar. A hot or cold pack may help with the pain. Any tentacles or particles on the skin should be carefully removed. Do not use your bare hands! If in doubt, get professional attention.

It's very disappointing to go down to the beach, ready for a swim only to see the warnings signs telling you not to go in the water. Many people ignore the signs, take a chance, go in anyway and unfortunately get stung.

Watch for the signs and be safe.
