The Honolulu Bus System is called TheBus and has tons of routes throughout Honolulu and Waikiki as well as many routes around the island. You can catch TheBus to most of the biggest island attractions, beaches, shopping areas and restaurants. You'll see tourists and locals using public transportation because it's easy and since parking can be difficult here, using theBus can save money on parking.
If you are staying in Honolulu and Waikiki, you can get around just fine walking, using theBus and Trolley and taxis. If you are planning some trips around the island, look in to renting a car. TheBus does go all over the island of Oahu but it might not offer you the flexibility you need if you're out exploring. Once you leave the Honolulu area, there are fewer routes and buses come less frequently. Check the schedules to see if theBus will work or not.
