Honolulu Banks

Honolulu Banks are not the same ones you find in other parts of the United States. If you're traveling here from another country, you know the banks will be different but those coming from other states may be surprised.

No Wells Fargo
No Bank of America
No Washington Mutual

For major purchases, a credit card can be used but some Honolulu restaurants do not take credit cards and if you want to use the bus or trolley, you need to have cash.

Getting to a bank or cash machine is easy in Honolulu but because you probably won't find your regular mainland bank here, you may face some fees. To avoid or at least minimize these bank fees, check with your financial institution to see if it has an agreement or co-op cash machines with banks here in Honolulu that might not charge to use their services.

Hawaii has several full service banks and credit unions and here are the biggest ones.

Bank of Hawaii sign.

Bank of Hawaii

Has the most cash machines in Hawaii and you will find them everywhere. Some branches are open on Saturday, Sunday and even holidays.

First Hawaiian Bank

Central Pacific Bank sign.

Central Pacific Bank

Their tagline is "Fiercely Loyal Banking" and you can always recognize a Central Pacific Bank by their adorable mascot: Alex the dog.

American Savings Bank

American Saving Bank sign. The third largest financial institution in Hawaii with the second largest branch network. Some locations have extended, weekend and holiday hours.

Be Prepared

We usually don't carry cash and neither do many tourists so we just wanted to let you know about the different Honolulu banks so you can be prepared. We want you to spend your time enjoying Honolulu and Waikiki, not searching for a bank that doesn't exist here!

One less thing to worry about letting you get back to enjoying your vacation in paradise.

Aloha!
