Ala Moana Beach in Honolulu is just a little ways away from the main Waikiki area going towards the downtown area. It is usually a bit quieter but still just as beautiful. The large sandy beach area offers plenty of room for beach activities or sunbathing and the water is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Not much surfing, though.
You can enjoy the beach and the park right next to it that has picnic tables, concessions and even tennis courts. The paved path along the beach and park make this a nice place for a stroll or jog especially if you have a stroller with you.
Ala Moana Park is right across the street from the Ala Moana Shopping Center, which is the largest shopping mall in Hawaii, and the Ward Center. Both the beach and the malls have free parking. As always, be very careful not to leave any valuables in your vehicle because theft is unforturnately common.
The Ala Moana Shopping Center is also a good place to get a bite to eat. It has a large food court and several restaurants. We like going to Shirokiya, a Japanese department store next to Macy's. Downstairs, they have a bakery with desserts as well as pizza and sandwiches and upstairs they've got a big cafeteria with sushi, soups, fish, all sorts of drinks, a smoothie counter and more. Seating is limited and it gets very crowded at meal times.
With the beach, the park, the shopping and restaurants, it's no wonder this Ala Moana area is so popular with both tourists and locals. If you're driving over, there is free parking available. If you don't have a car, both the trolley and TheBus come by regularly. It's a beautiful spot that's convenient to get to and a great place to spend the day.
